Thanksgiving Day, November 24, 2016, marked the 14th annual Turkey Dash hosted by the Monty Ballard YMCA of Katy. The Turkey Dash serves as a fundraiser for the facility’s Annual Campaign; money that guarantees membership for any Katy resident regardless of ability to pay membership fees, and helps pay for community outreach efforts.
Membership at the Monty Ballard YMCA, located at 22807 Westheimer Pkwy, Katy, TX, is not required to participate in their annual Turkey Dash. Anyone is welcome to register for the 10k, 5k, 1 mile run/walk, or bring children to the kids’ 1 mile.
Thanksgiving-related costumes are encouraged at the event, though not necessary for participants. All participants were welcome to compete in the 3rd annual costume contest this year on their own or in groups for the titles of “Best Thanksgiving Theme” and “Most Unique Costume”.
The earliest race, the kids’ 1 mile, started at 7:10 AM. The 10, 5k, and 1 mile walk or run started at 7:45 AM, 8:15 AM, and 9:15 AM, respectively.
This year’s routes all started and ended at the Monty Ballard YMCA. The 1 mile and 5k started in the Northbound lane of S. Peek Rd. and looped around to the Southbound lane, and the 10k started on S. Peek Rd, made two lefts onto Westpark Tollway Rd and S. Mason Rd, and finished at the YMCA from the Westbound lane of Westheimer Pkwy.
A total of 2801 runners made it to the finish line according the the YMCA’s posted race results. The winners of this year’s races include Todd Wiley from Pipersville, Pennsylvania who won the 10k race with a time of 34:31, and Katy local Ryan Yerrow, who won the 5k with a time of 15:58.
Everyone who came out to the event benefitted from post-race refreshments, prizes, a photo booth and a kids’ zone.
The 15th annual Turkey Dash will be hosted by the Monty Ballard YMCA on Thanksgiving Day next year, Thursday, November 23, 2017.
